1. What information do we collect?

Personal information you disclose to us

In Short: We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us.

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you use the community features of the Services, make a purchase, or otherwise contact us. The personal information we collect depends on how you interact with the Services and may include:

Information automatically collected

In Short: Some information — such as device information and minimal usage data — is collected automatically when you use the Services.

Information collected from other sources

We may collect information from Apple's App Store and StoreKit when you purchase a subscription (receipt, transaction ID, product ID, and subscription status). We do not receive your name, email address, or payment details from Apple.

Information stored locally on your device

The following information is stored only on your device and is not transmitted to our servers:

2. How do we process your information?

In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law.

We may process your personal information for the following purposes:

3. What legal bases do we rely on to process your information?

In Short: We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason to do so under applicable law.

If you are located in the EU or UK, this section applies to you. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on in order to process your personal information. As such, we may rely on the following legal bases:

If you are located in Canada, we may process your information under implied or express consent or where allowed by law without consent, including for investigation of fraud, safeguarding public interest, journalistic purposes, or where collecting consent is impossible or impractical.

4. When and with whom do we share your personal information?

In Short: We may share information in specific situations described in this section and/or with specific third parties.

We may share your personal information in the following situations:

We do not "sell" your personal information as that term is defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act), the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, the Colorado Privacy Act, the Connecticut Data Privacy Act, the Utah Consumer Privacy Act, or any other applicable US state privacy law. We do not "share" your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not disclose your personal information to advertisers, data brokers, or any third party for monetary or other valuable consideration. We have not done so in the preceding twelve (12) months and have no present intention to do so in the future.

Automated decision-making. We do not use your personal information for any automated decision-making, including profiling, that produces legal effects concerning you or similarly significantly affects you within the meaning of Article 22 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or analogous provisions of state law.

5. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?

In Short: MealSwipe is a mobile application and does not use browser cookies. We use device-level identifiers for core functionality only.

Because MealSwipe is delivered as a native iOS application rather than a web service, we do not use HTTP cookies, web beacons, pixel tags, or similar browser-based tracking technologies. We do use an anonymous device-level identifier issued by Supabase when you use community features; this identifier is necessary for the Services to function and cannot be used to track you across other apps.

We do not use third-party advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs that share data with advertising networks, or cross-app tracking technologies. MealSwipe does not request App Tracking Transparency permission because we do not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies.

6. Do we offer artificial intelligence-based products?

In Short: We use AI-assisted tooling internally to curate recipe content, but do not offer generative AI features to users or send your personal data to AI providers.

As part of our Services, we may use AI-assisted tooling for content curation, recipe categorization, and quality assurance. No personal information about you is sent to AI providers in connection with these internal processes. We do not offer consumer-facing generative AI features in the current version of the Services.

The recipes presented in the app are curated from a mixture of in-house editorial work, public-domain sources, and AI-assisted classification. All recipes are reviewed for format and presentation, but we do not guarantee nutritional accuracy, ingredient completeness, or the absence of allergens. You are solely responsible for verifying recipe information against your dietary needs. See Section 1 of the Terms of Service for additional cooking-safety disclaimers.

7. How do we handle your social logins?

In Short: The current version of MealSwipe uses anonymous authentication. Sign in with Apple may be added in a future release.

MealSwipe uses anonymous authentication via Supabase, which issues an opaque user identifier tied to your device. This identifier is used to attribute community posts and reactions to you within the Services, but does not contain your real name, email, or any other personally identifying information.

We may offer Sign in with Apple in a future release, which would allow you to link your anonymous account to your Apple ID. If you use Sign in with Apple, we will receive only the information you choose to share (which may include your name and a private-relay email address). We will update this Privacy Notice to reflect any such additions before they take effect.

8. How long do we keep your information?

In Short: We keep your information only as long as necessary to provide you with the Services and for our legitimate and essential business purposes, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.

The following table summarizes our retention schedule for the primary categories of personal information we process:

Category Retention period
Profile (username, anonymous user ID) Until you delete your account.
Community posts and reactions Until you delete them individually or delete your account.
Photos uploaded to community posts Until the associated post is deleted or your account is deleted.
Server logs and diagnostic data Up to 90 days, then automatically purged.
Support communications Up to 24 months from the date of the most recent communication.
Data subject requests and related correspondence Up to 24 months after the request is resolved, for appeal, audit, and regulator-inquiry purposes.
Apple in-app purchase receipts The longer of (a) 7 years for tax and accounting purposes, or (b) the length of your active subscription.
Content removed for policy violations Up to 12 months in an internal archive for abuse prevention, legal compliance, and appeals.

After your account is deleted, we retain a limited subset of data for a short period for very limited purposes, including compliance with legal obligations (such as tax records), fraud prevention, and the completion of in-flight payment reconciliations. If you request deletion of your information, please note that we retain certain information when required or permitted by applicable law. When we no longer have a legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will delete or anonymize it, or, if this is not possible (for example, because your personal information has been stored in backup archives), we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.

9. How do we keep your information safe?

In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information.

Our security practices include:

Although we will do our best to protect your personal information, transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.

10. Do we collect information from minors?

In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 13 years of age.

The Services are not directed to, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from, children under the age of 13. If you are based in a state or country with an older minimum age requirement, you may only use the Services if you are at or above the age at which you can provide consent to data processing under applicable law. This includes (without limitation) age 16 in the European Union, European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and certain US states; and age 14 or 15 in other jurisdictions. If you are under the applicable minimum age, do not use the Services or provide any personal information.

If we learn that personal information from users less than the applicable minimum age has been collected, we will deactivate the account and take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under the applicable minimum age, please contact us at [email protected].

MealSwipe's community features involve user-generated content and are rated accordingly on the App Store. Parents and guardians should use Apple's Screen Time and parental controls to manage their children's use of the Services.

11. What are your privacy rights?

In Short: Depending on your state or country of residence, you may have rights that allow you greater access to and control over your personal information. You may review, change, or terminate your account at any time.

Depending on where you reside, you may have the following rights:

To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected] or use the in-app Account Deletion feature in Settings. We will respond within 30 days (or the maximum period required under applicable law, whichever is shorter). We may ask you to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.

12. Controls for do-not-track and global privacy signals

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals. Because MealSwipe is a mobile application rather than a web browser, DNT signals typically do not apply to the Services.

Global Privacy Control (GPC). We honor Global Privacy Control ("GPC") signals where technically feasible and where required by applicable law, including California Consumer Privacy Act regulations (Cal. Code Regs. tit. 11, § 7025). Because MealSwipe does not engage in activities that qualify as "selling" or "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under CCPA/CPRA or analogous state laws, there is no "sale" or "share" to opt out of. If this ever changes, we will honor GPC signals transmitted from your browser or mobile operating system as a valid opt-out request.

Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT). Apple's ATT framework is respected: MealSwipe does not use third-party advertising trackers and therefore does not present an ATT prompt. If this ever changes, we will update this Privacy Notice and request permission before any tracking begins.

13. Do United States residents have specific privacy rights?

In Short: If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia, you may have the right to request access to and receive details about the personal information we maintain about you, correct inaccuracies, get a copy of, or delete your personal information. You may also have the right to withdraw your consent to our processing of your personal information.
